State intelligence

Where you have an obligation, where you are approaching one, and what it would cost.

Economic nexus means an obligation can be created by sales volume alone, without any physical presence. Thresholds differ by state and crossing one is not announced by anybody.

This page tracks your activity against each state threshold and flags approach rather than arrival.

How to work this page

Read approaching before triggered

A state you are approaching is a decision you can still make. A state you have triggered is a liability accruing.

Check both thresholds

Most states use a sales figure, some also use a transaction count, and either one can trigger alone.

Register where you have triggered

Registration is the remedy. Continuing to sell into a state where you have triggered and not registered accrues liability with penalty.

Consider voluntary disclosure for past exposure

Where you have been over the threshold for some time, most states offer a programme limiting the lookback. It is usually far cheaper than being found.

Every figure from the desktop appears here, stacked rather than reduced. Tables scroll inside themselves so the page never moves sideways, and figures keep their separators and their alignment at every width.

Questions people actually ask

Does marketplace activity count?

Under facilitator law the marketplace collects and remits, and in most states those sales still count toward your threshold. The page states the treatment per state.

What is the exposure figure?

Uncollected tax on sales into a state since you crossed its threshold, which is what a state would assess. It excludes penalty and interest.
