Sponsored programs, effort reporting, and the cost sharing you promised.

Research and program awards carry conditions the institution rather than the investigator is accountable for. Effort reporting and cost sharing are the two that most often go wrong.

Salary charged to an award has to reflect effort actually devoted to it. The certification is a personal statement and it has to be supportable.

How to work this page

Set up the award with its budget categories

The sponsor's categories, not your internal chart. Rebudgeting between them may need prior approval.

Charge salary to actual effort

Effort has to be certified by somebody with suitable means of verification. A certification nobody could support is a finding.

Track committed cost sharing

Cost sharing offered in a proposal becomes a binding commitment. It has to be tracked and documented like any other award cost.

Watch the closeout window

Final reports are due on a short deadline after the period ends. Late closeout affects future funding.

Every figure from the desktop appears here, stacked rather than reduced. Tables scroll inside themselves so the page never moves sideways, and figures keep their separators and their alignment at every width.

Questions people actually ask

What is the indirect cost rate?

Negotiated with your cognizant agency and applied to the permitted base. Where a sponsor caps it below the negotiated rate, the difference is generally unrecoverable and is recorded as such.

Can we move money between categories?

Sometimes within a tolerance, sometimes only with prior approval. The award's own terms are recorded and the rule is applied.
